Who We Are

What is the Sacred Order of Living Paganism, Inc.? It is best to begin to describe who we are by explaining who we are not. We are not a coven, a tradition or a church. We are an open religious order of men and women who desire an intense study and practice of Paganism. Any person who wishes to begin or intensify their study of Pagan beliefs and practices can become a member of the Order while still remaining a solitary or a member of any other Pagan group.

Specifically, we exist to:

The Order does not require that you study and practice in one and only one tradition or method. You are free to develop your own personal practice. We exist to provide ways to deepen your practice with support and encouragement.

The Order, as a whole, is comprised of separate groups called Academies (teaching groups) or Circles (organizational structures which include Academies).

If this type of learning and practice interests you, we invite you to explore our sight and consider joining us. You can contact a current Circle and ask how you can join or you can begin study with an academy or study online.

The Thirteen Principles

As Sisters and Brothers of the Sacred Order of Living Paganism, we believe:

1) in a single mysterious source of all existence which we call the Eternal Spirit.

2) in the division of the one source whom we may honor through our own deities.

3) in honoring, respecting, and revering the Eternal Spirit by studying and honoring the cycles of Nature.

4) in the idea that life can be renewed through the Eternal Spirit as part of the cycles of nature, that we can learn from the experiences of the past and that what we do now affects the future lives of ourselves and others.

5) that the physical world is not the only reality and that other realms may be explored and engaged.

6) in the power to focus and direct the will in order to enact transformations for the good of the self and all others.

7) in free will and understand the responsibilities inherent in acting in accordance with this freedom.

8) in leading our lives in ways which, to the greatest degree possible, do not cause harm to the self or others.

9) in the application of ethical principles such as the Five Precepts to our daily lives.

10) that all sacred paths and practices which do not cause harm to others are worthy of toleration and respect and that we can learn and grow from the wisdom of the world’s religious philosophies.

11) in the use of the circle and the four elements to attune to the workings of nature.

12) in honoring the solstices, equinoxes and cross quarter days (sabbats, the full moons (esbats), and the dark moons (astors).

13) that each person of right action and intent has the ability and right to become a member of the pagan clergy and that no single person has the right to dominate the spiritual life of another.

The Five Precepts

The Order defines the Five Precepts as the guiding document of ethical living for its members. As Sisters and Brothers of the Sacred Order of Living Paganism, we will work to affirm and uphold:

1) Reverence: Knowing that all things are sacred, we vow to live as we will to our full potential without seeking to cause harm to ourselves, to others, or to Earth.

2) Respect: Knowing that all beings are worthy of respect, we vow to honor and promote all others who seek to live in peace with themselves, all beings, and Earth.

3) Reason: Knowing that reason is a part of the spiritual quest, we vow to live by the right intent of our higher selves.

4) Responsibility: Knowing that that we are responsible to ourselves and to others and that all actions have consequences, we vow to live and act always with honor.

5) Revelry: Knowing that a spiritual person celebrates life, we vow to live in joy.
